African Voices Theater Issue - Fall/Winter 2010
African Voices' special issue honors Black theater legends. Edited and conceived by renowned author/journalist Maitefa Angaza, "A Great Day in Theater" is inspired by the iconic 1958 photograph "A Great Day in Harlem," which featured 57 of Harlem's greatest jazz musicians. This is part one of a two-part tribute to Black theater. Our Fall/Winter 2010 features play excerpts by writers Cesi Davidson, Ave Maria Cross and Sonia Sanchez and a short story by Woodie King, Jr., founder of the New Federal Theatre.
Theater legends Voza Rivers (New Heritage Theater) and Woodie King, Jr. worked with our editorial team to capture a history making photograph of theater greats including Melvin Van Peebles, P.J. Gibson, Douglas Turner Ward, Leek Hunkins, Amiri Baraka, Rome Neal, Dyane Harvey-Salaam, David Wright, Ebony Jo-Ann, Arthur French, Jr., among many distinguished artists.
